Food Travels - Spaghetti and Potato

Food Travels: Spaghetti and Potato: Food offers many examples of long distance cultural exchange. Traders and travellers introduced new crops to the lands they visited, It is a common belief that noodles travelled West from China and became spaghetti.

Perhaps Arab traders took pasta to Sicily (island), Italy in the 5th century. Similar foods were also known in India and Japan. All these incidents suggested long distance cultural contact between different countries even in the pre-modern era.

Common foods like potatoes, soya, groundnuts, maize, tomatoes, chillies, sweet potatoes etc were introduced in Europe and Asia after Christopher Columbus discovered Americas, These foods came from America's original inhabitants-the American Indians.

Potato as a New Crop: Sometimes, new crops made an immense difference in the overall life style (life and death) of the common people of a particular region. Europe's poor began to eat better and live longer with the introduction of the potato.

Ireland's poorest peasants became very much dependent on potatoes. During the Great Irish Potato Famine (in the 1845 to 1849), around 1 million people died of starvation and 2 million emigrated in search of work.

Thus, food is an example of long distance cutural exchange since pre modern times.
